Seth Godin recently asked his readers to share their copy of his book "The Dip" in a post entitled "Would you do me a favor?" At first I thought that Mr. Godin was a bit off his gourd with such an oddball request to loan my copy of The Dip to someone. But then something magical happened.
Amazingly, I had The Dip collecting dust on my bookshelf for almost a year before I finally cracked it just a month ago. It was perfectly timed reading that rocked my world. It caused me to honestly evaluate the effort I was pouring into my iPhone Savior blog firmly holding my obscure place among thousands of Mac centric websites. It's like trying to climb a chrome wall while wearing a suit covered in Vaseline.
I was sharing with a close friend who was visiting from Spain how much of an impact that little book has had on my personal decision making, much like a well placed explosive. Two days after I read Seth's request I found myself passing along my copy of his mind grenade on our way to the airport. The Dip will now make it's way over to Spain where it's needed. What a great feeling.
Seth's money quote for me was; "The way you become the best in the world is by quitting the stuff where you can't be the best. That leaves you the resources to invest in getting through the Dip." Exactly! Im now back to focusing my quality time on my Best Kisses website with my wife Terri and I'm loving it.
The moral of this story is never stop learning, never stop sharing what you've learned and be open to following a crazy request once in awhile. You might find that it's not so crazy after all. It takes guts to quit the wrong stuff in order to focus on the right stuff. It's really that simple. Pass it on.
Thanks Seth!
